Tallon Zek PvP

Player versus Player. Either you love it or you hate it.

I love it. If a game doesnt have it there is a very good chance I wont even bother trying it. And I know I wont play long if it doesnt have pvp. I wouldnt have even done a mmorpg if it wasnt for pvp.

I do alot of pen and paper roleplaying and back in '99 there was a gaming group I played a couple times a week with. Every time I would show up the guy whose house we were playing at or his wife were playing Everquest. I mocked them for weeks as we waited and waited for them to get finish with a dungeon or something so we could actually roleplay. At the time they played on the Bristlebane server (no pvp) so I wasn't that interested. Then Tallon Zek came out and the guy, Gary, said it was a race war server where you get to kill the other players if they weren't on your team. Now being a big fan of dwarfs in all fantasy games and hating pansy elves, this sounded alright so I decided I would show up an hour early or stay an hour later to play. Suffice to say I was hooked.

It wasn't the awesome graphics that got me into it. It wasn't the stability of the game because lord knows EQ crashed alot back then. It wasn't the cool stuff I could get. It was the fact I could log in, run over to Faydark and find a fight with some elves. Not some NPC, but a live actually person who had a brain (kinda) and every fight would be different.

EQ had its fault when it came to pvp. Hill bugging, ShowEQ and an over dependence on gear. That doesn't even get to the huge class imbalances that I have yet to see in any game since then. But it is the best pvp game that I have played. Ill go into more detail about EQ pvp sometime in the future when I break down how to do pvp right in an mmorpg.
